ISSUE 08 - Arteworld: In conversation with Peter Ajuchi

Peter is a London-based creative director, curator, and connector and the founder of Sonderhaus CIC
Background & Journey
How did you first get into the creative field, and what led you to become a curator/creative director in London?
"I started in fashion, designing, styling, and eventually working as a creative director for a streetwear brand in London. That job opened doors, taught me a lot about people and collaboration.
When I left, I realised my real passion wasn’t just in visuals but in creating environments where creativity and connection happen naturally."

What was the moment when you realised you wanted to create something like Sonderhaus CIC (or work in that kind of community-building space)?
"It happened right after I left that brand. I met someone who had a space and was open to ideas, and I had a friend who was a fine artist.
So we decided to throw an exhibition, we added DJs, live performances, and invited everyone we knew. It worked, people loved it, and that became the first Sonderhaus event. From there I thought, “alright, let’s keep this going.”
No plan, just pure energy that evolved into what it is now."

Creative Philosophy & Practice
How do you define "creativity" in your work, and how does that definition influence the events or initiatives you produce?
"Creativity, to me, is connection: the energy that moves between people, ideas, and emotion.
I’ve never seen design as just fashion or visuals; it’s about creating value, about bringing meaning into form. I’ve always moved across disciplines, following curiosity more than titles. Essentially, I’m a creative director who creates not for beauty alone, but for empathy, purpose, and impact; turning ideas into spaces where people can feel something real."
When curating an event or creative project, what are the key elements you always look for?
"Authenticity. Flow. Community. If something feels honest and brings people together naturally, that’s when it works. I’m not interested in forced perfection. I want real energy, real moments. "
"Creativity, to me, is connection: the energy that moves between people, ideas and emotion."
Community, Collaboration & Impact
How do you create space for under-represented voices or less-visible creatives in your events or networks?
"By making the spaces genuinely welcoming. I don’t just host an event and stand back, I make sure I talk to people, introduce them to others, and bring them into the environment. It’s important to me that everyone feels comfortable enough to open up, create, and connect.
At Sonderhaus, it’s never about status or who you know, it’s about energy. Whether someone’s an artist showing their work for the first time or just came to see what’s happening, I make sure they feel seen and part of the moment. That sense of comfort and belonging is where creativity really starts to flow."

What impact do you hope your work has on the creative individuals you bring together, and on the wider cultural ecosystem?
"I want people to leave feeling lighter, inspired, connected, seen. If Sonderhaus can give someone confidence, or even just remind them they’re part of something bigger, that's an impact. I want to keep shaping culture in a way that feels human again."
Current & Future Vision
Looking ahead, what is your vision for Sonderhaus CIC (or your creative platform) in the next 3-5 years?
"To grow it into a consistent ecosystem for creativity: more events, more collaborations, and eventually a physical space that embodies what Sonderhaus stands for: connection, expression, and purpose.
A home for creativity that never stops evolving."
"I want people to feel lighter, inspired, connected, seen."

If you could give one piece of advice to an up-and-coming creative director or curator starting in London today, what would it be?
"Build community before you build brand. Be consistent, stay open, and let your work speak with honesty. The right people will find you."
